Burleigh County Reminds Residents of Firework Restrictions
By Laurina Hannan
Firework vendors are putting up tents in preparation for Independence Day. And for one vendor, it's about more than making a sale.
"I love them. Everybody's happy. People want to come in and buy fireworks. So, it's not, it's not, a high-pressure sales situation. They're in. They want to buy. I love seeing people and their kids with their smiles on their faces, really is what I like," says Brad Schmitz, Black Powder Fireworks.
People can enjoy shooting fireworks in some places, but not others.
"Fireworks can be sold starting the 27th of June, and we just want to remind the citizens of the Burleigh County and the surrounding areas that fireworks are prohibited in Burleigh County parks," says Burleigh County auditor Kevin Glatt.
They're also prohibited in Bismarck city limits. And fireworks are not allowed in certain recreational areas and other areas nearby.
"And most of these areas are located adjacent to North Dakota Game and Fish lands and Corps of Engineering lands, where they also have fireworks banned. And, you know, one thing we found through the years is that the cost of clean-up after the 4th of July is just getting larger and larger every year, primarily due to the litter left by the fireworks. And so, we just want to remind everybody that the county parks are off limits for fireworks," says Glatt.
It's not just about the litter.
"And it boils down to it being a safety issue. Many fireworks don't end up being used the way they're designed to be used. They're thrown, they're left, and the wick is still burning, and they haven't exploded. So therefore, they're banned in the parks as far as a safety issue," says Greg Smith, Bismarck Parks and Recreation.
Where fireworks are allowed, people need to be sure to follow state laws and make sure they are in a safe and unrestricted environment.
"Fireworks should be used in accordance with the law and time frames as specified by state law and always under competent adult supervision," says Smith.
Fireworks can be sold in North Dakota until July 5th.
