New Study Puts Williston Population Growth Into Perspective

Posted: Updated:

People moving to Williston looking for jobs isn't anything new.

The Western Star City is the fastest growing micropolitan city in the country two years running, and some new numbers released by the U.S. Census Bureau put the population growth into perspective.

There have been a number of population studies in Williston, but one of the most recent studies measures new residents per person. Mayor Ward Koeser says these numbers might be able to help the city, when it comes to working with lawmakers.

"I think it helps people grasp really how many housing units we need, whether they're single family home, apartment, or whatever, how many we need actually every month," says Williston Mayor Ward Koeser.

The U.S. Census Bureau says Williston averages one new resident every four hours, six per day, 42 every week, and 190 new residents per month, making Williston a modern day Ellis island.

"My wife and I actually drove through one of the trailer parks a few weeks ago, and just in that park we counted 31 different states represented, but that's a good thing though," Koeser adds.

190 new residents per month, measures out to around 60 families moving to Williston every 30 days.

"The exciting part of it, I think it's telling us that people are coming here now, not just for oilfield jobs, but for service sector jobs," adds Koeser.

The future is hard to predict, but Koeser says Williston will be welcoming more residents for years to come.

"I would predict that the city if Williston, in the not too many years, get to 30,000 permanent population. I think it may take us 4 or 5 years to do that," Koeser adds.

Another sign people are starting to move to Williston on a more permanent basis, 400 people applied to work at Williston's newest restaurant, Doc Holidays.
