Mandan Municipal Airport Construction

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota's economy is booming. And with that comes the opportunity for more business ventures. That's just what the Mandan Municipal Airport manager has in mind as crews work on resurfacing the runway. Construction crews are hard at work at the Mandan Municipal Airport.

"It is normally in need of repair and actual replacement, so maintenance just will not do it anymore," said airport manager Jim Lawler.

The airport runway is 35 years old. It has lasted 15 years beyond the life of a typical runway. And while the airport staff was planning a major renovation in 2015, new FAA standards pushed it up.  While crews are resurfacing this runway, planes are having to land on grass turf.

"With the runway being torn up and closed, a lot of people will not land on a grass runway. That is what we have open. So our traffic is way down because of the closure of the runway," Lawler said.

Despite the temporary impacts, Lawler is hoping this new runway will attract more air traffic.

"I think, yeah, we will see more traffic. We are trying to attract a larger type aircraft, turbo props and small jets. We have jet fuel," Lawler said.

Construction is expected to be complete in October. The runway will be able to handle 12,500 pounds, which is what a small jet with six to ten passengers would weigh.
