Ribfest Competition Heats Up

The hours are ticking down until the sixth annual Downtowner's Rip-Roaring Ribfest kicks off in the Civic Center parking lot.  This year brings two new ribbers to the lineup.

The ribs are starting to smoke, and the excitement is heating up as the booths for the ribbers go up, and Ribfest gets closer to kicking off.

"We're just looking forward to meeting all the nice people from up here and feeding you some Arkansas-style barbeque," says Porky Chicks ribber Mark Grant of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Porky Chicks has won the people's choice awards at the last few Ribfests where they've competed.

"We got first place in Wichita, Kansas, people's choice, we got first place in Berea, Ohio and we got first place in Medford, Ohio," he says.

Mark Grant says he's hoping those showing up at the Bismarck event will also appreciate his Arkansas-style ribs.

"Everybody likes trying something new," says Grant. "We're kind of the new kids on the block and we'd appreciate it if everyone came out to try us."

Also new this year is Rasta Joe's.

"We have a Jamaican-style sauce, actually the sauce, the Island Fire has original jerk sauce from Jamaica in the sauce, and in the barbeque sauce we have the rum, so it has a little bit of the island flair to it," says ribber Joe Alexander.

Rasta Joe's has been in competition for 22 years, and Alexander says people not only love the ribs, they also love his new hoagie that takes two hands to hold.

"It's called the Porkinator.  The Porkinator is an 8-inch hoagie and it's got a pound, pound and a half of pulled pork on it, two slices of ham, four pieces of maple-flavored bacon and pepper jack cheese, and just for the veggie end of it we put some pepperonchinis in it," Alexander says.

In addition to the food, Ribfest will also feature live music, vendor booths, and inflatable games. Ribfest runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. tomorrow through Saturday.  Admission is free for lunch. Otherwise, it's $5.00 for adults.
