Inside Business: Cloverdale Foods Company

Cloverdale Foods Company started in Mandan in 1915 as the Mandan Creamery.  Over the years, the company has continued to expand and evolve, and today it is one of the largest pork processing businesses in the upper Midwest.

Vice President Scott Russell is a 4th-generation member of the founding family.

"In the 1950s we diversified into meats.  In the late 60s, early 70s we got out of the dairy business and began to sharpen our focus on being a meat company," says Russell.

And that's what the company focuses on today. Their slogan is "The Small Company With the Big Taste for Flavor," but small is a matter of interpretation. Depending on the season, between 250 and 300 employees work at the facility, processing all things meaty, from summer sausage to salami.

Cloverdale makes over 200 products in 17 different categories.  One of the biggest sellers is also Russell's favorite, bacon.  Cloverdale sells 6.5 million pounds of bacon each year.

"We grow well with it.  It's exceptionally profitable, and easy.  And it tastes great, too," says Russell.

While Cloverdale is still looking to stay lean financially, they are always searching for new ways to grow. Through the years, Russell says they have learned to not bite off more than they can chew.

"We've gone out and tried to do aggressive growth.  It's not the right formula for us.  So we really found if we stick to high single digit growth expectations for ourselves we're able to profit."

One new way they promote the brand is with a trailer, called "The Big Flavor Tour." It is something Cloverdale can use to introduce the product to new areas, and provide demonstrations to increase their sales. It's been a big hit with distributors, trade shows and retail grocery stores, but unfortunately, it's not available for backyard barbeques.
