National Donut Day

School is out for the summer and that means families who depended on the school system for their student's breakfast and lunch during the school year are now turning to other places for help.

Many of them turn to the Salvation Army.  National Donut Day started during the Great Depression as a fundraiser to help people in need.  And it's the same today.

"We just grabbed a bunch of stuff out of the pantry and we're bringing it in," said mom Danielle Fischer.

Fischer and her three kids were just one family of many who came to Bearscat Bakehouse in Bismarck, trading their donations for donuts.

"We're hoping that people bring in a canned good. They get a free donut and we're hoping to fill our pantry to help all the people in town here that need help," said Lee Ann Knoll, a volunteer with the Bismarck Salvation Army.

Knoll and other Salvation Army volunteers were handing out information about the good the group does in the community and thanking people for their food donations.

"We've had a few boxes full already," Knoll said in the late morning.

But she said more is always better, especially with the increased demand they're seeing in the community.

"With all the people that are moving in to the state with the oil, we have a lot of people that are just coming in with the shirts on their back and need help," Knoll explained.

What wasn't staying full were the donut shelves.

Last year, the Bismarck-Mandan Salvation Army handed out more than 100 tons of food to 1,700 households.  The Salvation Army also served 9,800 meals and snacks at their community youth center.
