Naval Vessel to be Named After Bismarck

Bismarck Mayor John Warford says he was taken aback when the Secretary of the Navy called to tell him a new ship would be named after the city.

Mayor Warford says when he first found out that Secretary Ray Mabus wanted to talk to him, he didn't know what it was about. Once he found out, Warford says it was an honor.

This class of ships is named after small communities and Warford says he believes the naming is a tribute to the city.

"He said that I'm naming this ship after Bismarck because of the patriotism in your community and because of the support this community has given to our armed services over the years," says Warford.

The USNS Bismarck is one of three new joint high speed vessels (JHSVs) that will be built in February 2015. JHSVs can carry equipment or troops and are often used for humanitarian missions or disaster relief.
