Sports Spotlight - Ashley Westbee

Goal scorers often are more recognized than defensive players on the soccer field, but senior defender Ashley Westbee's isn't bothered by it.

"It's a lot of responsibility and it's not necessarily you got a lot of accolades from it but it shows in your teams success in how well your defense is."

Westbee captained an underdog Century team to the state title this year and earned first team all-state honors as a defender in the process.

"It was hard to believe right away, it felt we had more to go. We played with a lot of heart. We may not have been the most talented team, but we put forth the most effort," explained Westbee.

"Ashley played a huge role for us especially starting for freshman in the state tournament. That's almost unheard of and you'd almost think that's kind of risky, but with Ashley, she gave those freshman that confidence and that cool, calm collective persona on the field where she just reeled them him. She got them dialed them in. They were calm. They played really well for us and Ashley led them. When we went up she got them all together and basically told them we don't give this us we finish the game," said Century head coach Nate Ulness.

Westbee's skills earned her a spot with the Concordia College women's soccer team next year and when she suits up for the Cobbers, goofing around or telling jokes likely won't be what she will be known for.

"She definitely is the more serious one," added Ulness. "I like to joke around at practice and sometimes Westbee will give me that look like, 'Nate that's enough lets get going.' The girls will buy into that."

"You have a lot of crazy people on your team and you got to have someone to pull them all in and have them focus," said Westbee.

Her head coach agrees.

"She keeps us level headed, great leader for the team, great leader for the squad. The girls all looked up to her, and we're definitely going to miss her next year."

Westbee's coach next fall at Concordia will be Kevin Roos. He coached against Ashley in Saturday's state championship.
