Bismarck Crime Report Reveals Increase In Crime

Every year, the Bismarck Police Department takes a look at what the previous year meant for their department, and for the city.  And like many years past, they found that the crime rate was rising.
Overall, there were more than 2,000 more crimes reported in 2012 than there were in 2011.

"We're busier," says Bismarck police chief Dan Donlin. "We're busier in calls for service. They've increased not only from 2010 to 2011, but then again from 2011 to 2012.  With that increase being busier, we're seeing more crimes that we're responding to."

The crime rate per person went up in 2012 as well.  There were 18.8 serious personal crimes per 1000 people and 72.3 serious property crimes per 1000 people last year.

"Many of those crimes are just crimes of opportunity.  When you look at property crimes, not locking your doors, leaving valuables in your cars, leaving keys in cars, things like that," Donlin says.

One of the most serious concerns for the department was an increase in aggravated assault, especially in domestic cases.  Of the 151 aggravated assaults reported last year, 79 were related to domestic violence.  And 445 of the 755 simple assaults last year were also domestic.

"We train our officers on the importance of thorough investigations from the outset of the reporting of a domestic violence," says Donlin.  "Probably most important is our coordination of the advocacy groups like AARC to ensure that we're offering the people involved the opportunity to get assistance."

Police officers responded to more than 36,000 calls for service last year.  That's up nearly 10% from the year before. Alcohol continued to be a contributing factor in many cases, especially in assaults, where 60% of the cases involved alcohol. More than 600 people were arrested for DUI in 2012 and the average blood alcohol content for those tested was more than twice the legal limit.
