Officer On The Train

"It`s our goal, it`s our mission today to make sure people are observing safety at the railroad crossings," said Michael Nason of the Ward County Sheriff's Department.

Minot took part in North Dakota`s "Officer on the Train" event to educate the public about rail safety.

"Public law enforcement agencies are important partners of Canadian Pacific, so today we`re partnering with them to give them a train crew view of rail crossing safety, as well as helping them to educate the public about these laws," added Andy Cummings, a member of Canadian Pacific Railway.

Ward County Sheriff`s Department and the Minot Police Department teamed up with Amtrak, Canadian Pacific Railways and the BNSF Railway Company to watch for rail crossing violations.

"It`s just so important that people obey these laws because too often the consequence can be fatal," stated Cummings.

In 2012 alone, there were 27 vehicle-train accidents that resulted in 16 injuries and 4 deaths in North Dakota.

"At the end of the day, trains always win and people have to realize that.  They want to get to their destinations safely and it`s absolutely imperative that they stop at those crossings", said Nason.

If you`re caught illegally passing through a train crossing in North Dakota, it`s a $50.00 fine and 3 points on your license.

"I think a lot of it has to do with increased traffic everywhere in the state.  Anytime you have more people crossing in front of a train at those crossings, unfortunately those incidents are going to increase," commented Craig Erickson, an officer with the Canadian Pacific Police Service.

It can take more than a mile for a fully loaded freight train to come to a complete stop. Taking that into consideration, local law enforcement says keeping yourself safe comes down to just three words, "The message is simple: look, listen, live," concluded Nason.

No railroad violations were observed on the day of the event.
