Summer Reading Kickoff

Posted: Updated:

Summer vacation has already started for kids in North Dakota. Today was another rainy day, but a few thousand youngsters found interesting and educational activities to do inside.

Rain or shine it's always a great time to dig into a book, but watch out, reading can be addicting.

"Sometimes I'll sneak a book into my room and read it," said Audrey Groevner.

Librarians say some kids could read all day.

"They don't want to leave. They want to hang out. They want to read, they're excited about the books they want to find. They're upset when they're limited to five books or whatever and they get into this whole debate about which ones they should take," said Traci Juhala with the Bismarck Public Library.

To satisfy the demand for summer reading, libraries are always getting new books.

"We have a lot of really fun graphic novels for those kids that are into the comic-type books. We got some really beautiful books coming and some of the pop series that have been converted into graphic novels, it's fun to see some of the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series, Scooby Doo. If you like Star Wars books, any of the super heroes," Juhala said.

They're cartoon epics.

"I've been reading this book called Bones and it's about these three bones that get lost trying to get back to their village called Boneville," said Angelo Zamba.

"I like to read Charlotte's Web. The Rattletrap Car and The Monster at the End of the Book," Groevner said.

If you can't make it to the library, it may be able to come to you. Both Burleigh and Morton counties have book mobiles that travel throughout the area.

Narrative non-fiction is also becoming popular with younger readers.

You can check out summer activities for both Bismarck and Morton Mandan Public Library online or by stopping by and picking up brochures.
