Good Works: Worth More Than a Paycheck

After retirement, some people look for volunteering opportunities that also provide social interaction. There are those who prefer to get together with grownups. Others like to be with children.

In that case, you can't beat being a foster grandparent.

She has several grandchildren, but Jackie Aldinger was looking for something to do during the day. And this opportunity kind of fell into her lap.

"I moved to Bismarck about six and a half years ago and moved into an apartment. You can only clean an apartment so many times. And so I was kind of looking for something but not a job. So my daughter found a flier hanging in her church in Wilton, and she said, ‘Mom, I think this is for you.' And I checked in on it and went from there."

Foster grandparents help in the classroom by doing anything a teacher needs them to do. And they also spend a lot of time helping students who have fallen behind and need to polish their skills. Of course, it helps to love children.

"You know, the little kids, they come up and they give you hugs. You see them in a grocery store and you hear, ‘Hey Grandma Jackie!' And then they run and throw their arms around you. The parents kind of look like ‘who's that?' Ha, ha, ha, ha. And also when you got one little guy that's really behind and really kind of struggling, and you kind of get him over his hump. And it's really pleasing to know that he's finally now up with the rest of his class. And that's real rewarding. "
