Good Works: Filling a Need

Volunteering can be contagious. Try it once and you might be tempted to keep it up. Many organizations ask for help. Then there are people who see a need and take matters into their own hands.

Knitting has been a big part of Delores Byrum's life. It began as a hobby to ease her anxiety nearly 50 years ago when her soldier husband was serving in Vietnam.

"I bought one of those little how to books. Told you how to knit and crochet and all that kind of stuff. Taught myself how to knit and it turned into a very profitable hobby for me."

But it's been more than a money maker. She asked a hospital if it could use knitted caps for newborn babies. She was told yes and the rest is history. It takes about three hours to make one, and over the years, she's made 1,200 of them.

"The very first batch of hats I took over there, I was taken up into the nursery and got to hold the little baby that had just been born, I think the day before, and had one of my hats on. So that was kind of fun," she said.

Delores may knit alone, but in any other volunteer venture, her husband Darrell is right by her side. In the last 15 years or so, they've spent about 30,000 hours in service, from being campground hosts to preparing tax returns to taking tickets at community events.

"Well, usually if it's something we haven't done before, it kind of intrigues us to get out there and try it. Other things we've done, we've done for so many years that we just do it and not even give it any thought, really," Darrell said.

The Byrums say as long as you're mobile enough to get around, there's no shortage of ways to volunteer. They suggest contacting RSVP at 258-5449 to learn of opportunities.

If you would like us to highlight a person or organization that's doing good for others, call me at 701-255-8184 or send me an email at amiller@kfyrtv.com, or on Facebook. They may not like being in the spotlight but they probably deserve it.
