Record Setting Growth

Posted: Updated:

It's no surprise North Dakota is booming. Month after month, the State Tax Department reports more growth. But it may not last forever. There may be a slow down in the near future.

It's been less than a year since Fireflour Pizza opened in downtown Bismarck. Like many other businesses in North Dakota, it's doing well.

"It's been a great opportunity. I think we have had success and continuing to grow different cliental. It has been a good environment. People have accepted us really well and our business has been growing month to month," said owner Kenny Howard.

The Tax Department just released their fourth quarter numbers for 2012 and North Dakota had growth in all 15 sectors. Some of the largest sectors of growth are construction, wholesale trade and the oil industry.  The report also shows consumers are spending more money.

"It was a great year and its no surprise, you just need to drive across the state, get out and see what's going on in our communities across North Dakota and know we're setting records," said Tax Commissioner Cory Fong.

Although all the taxable sales showed a nine percent increase, Fong says that is lower than previous months, which could be a sign of things slowing down.

"We're starting to level off. We're starting to see more of a reasonable pace which is probably good for us, so we can catch our breath and catch up. And I'm sure that's going to be good for some of those communities."

But for the time being, it's a plus to be a business owner in a booming economy.

"It doesn't hurt to have a booming economy where people will spend their disposable income a little bit more," Howard said.

Williston surpassed Fargo for the highest taxable sales statewide. And Tioga even surpassed Dickinson.
