Police Identify Man Killed by Train

UPDATE

Police have identified the man killed after being hit by a train early Tuesday morning. He is identified as 59-year-old John Dean Westra of Fargo.

On Tuesday, May 28, at approximately 4:00 a.m., the Fargo Police Department responded to a pedestrian accident involving a train at 4th Street North and Main Ave. The initial investigation indicated the eastbound train struck a male who was approaching the tracks from the south.

The case remains under investigation.

 ORIGINAL STORY

Fargo Police are investigating the death of man who was struck and killed by a train Tuesday morning.

The BNSF Dilworth yard called police just after 4am reporting one of their trains had hit someone at the 4th St. & Main Ave. crossing. The train blocked all crossings in downtown Fargo for about an hour. 4th Street & Main Avenue was closed until about 6:45am

BNSF officials will be able to download information from the trains computer to see just how fast it was going through downtown. Crossing arms were working while police investigated.

It's still unknown if this was an act of suicide or accidental, police have yet to release the name of the victim.

The crossing at 4th & Main is now back open to traffic and pedestrians.
