Inside Business: Scheels

Posted: Updated:

Scheels has had a growing presence in Bismarck ever since the Fargo-based company first opened in the city in the 1960s. Now, the store is even bigger.

The final pieces are finally being put into place in a 40,000 square foot expansion that started in December.

"We took over the old space, with demolition, that took quite awhile and now just last week pretty much finished up opening all the projects," said manager Dennis Bense.

The store now has 140,000 square feet, all on one level. The extra space lets them offer a bigger selection and gives customers more space to move around.

"A runner, for example, might have more to choose from.  We're expanding what we have," Bense said.

He says customer feedback has been positive.

Bense says the additional square footage allows them to add more merchandise on the shelves, and also allows them to add additional attractions to the store, including an expanded restaurant. "If you look at Grandma Ginna's, the mall is limited in food.  That was an opportunity for us to keep people in the store."

It now also boasts amenities like a small, two lane bowling alley and a golf simulator, where customers can test out a new set of golf clubs.

"Sports entails a lot of things, not just clothing and shoes," Bense said.

Bense says customers like the expanded store and what it has to offer and management is working hard to fill all the new sales positions.

Scheels is also able to special order items from any of the roughly two-dozen stores it has. If there's a certain item you want that isn't in stock in Bismarck, they can still get it for you.
