Main Street Minute: Mike`s Barber Shop and the Cowan Building

For the past 28 years, Mike Eldred has run a one-chair barber shop in Williston. In October, he and his wife moved, but Eldred decided he wasn't ready to retire just yet. So he has a new shop, in the Jake's Auto Glass building on the strip in Mandan.

Eldred opened Mike's Barber Shop in February.

"I certainly had that desire to once again open up a shop. It's something I really enjoy doing. It's just fun meeting people and working with them and learning about the community. You learn a lot about people when you're cutting their hair," he said.

While Mike offers a few extras, like beard trimming, his main focus is cutting men's hair. He also offers children's haircuts.

Mike's Barber Shop takes appointments as well as walk in clients.

Renovations continue on the Cowan building in downtown Bismarck. Developer Loran Galpin says progress on the demolition is coming along well. The asbestos has been removed, and the building is beginning to be leased to occupants. Galpin says two parties are vying for first floor space, where he'd like a restaurant and bar to open.

The building should be ready for its first occupants by late August to late September.
