Inside Business: Kates Fine Photography

Take one look at some of Deborah Kates` prints, and you can tell that this kind of photography can`t be easily done at home or with your cell phone. And it`s not just the number of megapixels that matters.

"People want the good retouch. They want the finished product on print," she said.

Kates has a storefront in downtown Bismarck and a studio in Mandan. She`s been shooting portraits since 2006 after her husband Don, who is also a professional photographer, introduced her to digital SLR cameras.

"I enjoy people. Portraits, I like portraits. My husband likes bikes, he shoots for magazines, and I like people," she said.

She can turn those portraits into large prints with a new fine art printer that can make prints up to 44 inches wide on a variety of materials.

One of the most noticeable differences between Kates Fine Art Photography and what you might produce at home with your digital camera is the quality of the final print.

"I can print on canvas, fine art museum papers, water papers," she said.

That finished product is just part of what makes her photography stand out. Kates is an international award-winning wedding photographer, a member of the Artistic Guild of the Wedding Photojournalist Association, and she is passionate about her work.

"I focus on people`s eyes, expression, emotion. I like to capture emotion."

What she won`t be capturing through the lens of her camera is a larger client base. Kates says she plans to keep her business small, focus on her strong client base, and continue to produce fine art, one print at a time.

Kates also has photography studios in Chicago and South Dakota.
