The Bismarck football team is absolutely loaded this year and one of the playmakers for the Demons is Calvin Krueger.....
But did you know that Krueger played soccer as a ninth grader until halfway through the season when he switched to football...
"Basically I wanted to play a contact sport and a lot of my friends played football," he says.
Who knows how soccer would have turned out for Krueger, but the decision to trade shin guards for a football helmet appears to have been a good one. As a wide receiver and defensive back Krueger is a big play machine for the Demons. And of course with his soccer background he also serves as the kicker.
"The one thing about Calvin is he never leaves the field for us," says Bismarck head coach Mark Gibson. "He`s kicking, he`s returning, he`s offense, one of our better receivers. He`s also an all-state returning defensive back."
"He`s the kind of guy that no matter what sport or what it is he`s just always really good at it," says senior quarterback Esley Thorton. "Naturally a good athlete."
Krueger and Thorton are a part of a passing game for the Demons that is so refined it`s hard to believe there a high school team.
"Were on the same page, all of our receivers and Esley," says Krueger. "We work out after practice so we know what each other are doing."
"Calvin`s just an all around athlete, whether it be defense, special teams, offense," says Thorton. "Any time you throw it to him I can rely on him. I know he`ll adjust to the ball to catch it. Defense, he`s just always in the right place at the right time."
And when Krueger is in the right place at the right time and gets the ball, he`s not looking for the sideline.
"I like getting the ball in the open field and than basically when I get the ball I just keep running around until I find an opening," he says.
Krueger also looks for openings in the winter. He will be the Demons leading returning scorer in hockey.
