Grant Singer
Scott Westerberg
10/14/2009
He`s a double-double machine on the basketball court and a touchdown scoring machine on the football field.

He is a big reason why his school has enjoyed a lot of success in those two sports.

So tonight, we put Grant Singer in this week`s sports spotlight.

It was a familiar scene last season and it`s been no different this year as Grant Singer continues to physically punish his opponents.

"Just run hard and fast and try and get in that endzone and on defense you got to read it watch those guards pulling and see what happens," Singer says.

And his physical play doesn`t stop when the football season ends. Even though he barely tops 6-feet, Singer is a dominating force on the hardwood as well. He has been part of 4 9-man playoff teams with Central McLean and the only two state tournament berths for Turtle Lake-Mercer in the last 30 years.

"In basketball going to state and playing in a state championship it`s really cool and even when I was a freshman in football I didn`t get to play but our team went to state there," Singer says. "The experience is cool especially the Class B environment and 9-man football playoffs. It`s really neat to experience."

Whether it`s in a Cougar jersey in the fall or a Trojan uniform in the winter, Singer has been accustom to winning and that attitude has rubbed off on his teammates.

"I think he leads by example," says Kevin Dockter, the Central McLean Co-Head Coach. "He`s a hard worker, doesn`t say a whole lot, but he`s there the whole time going hard the whole time and they see that."

And with opposing teams focused on trying to stop Singer, it`s given others the chance to shine.

"A kid his size, with his speed and athleticism it opens up a lot of things for other people on our team, and I think our other guys have stepped up and made plays too," Dockter says.

Singer says he`s not sure where he`ll end up next year, but some lucky coach will be getting a players who knows how to work hard and how to win.

Tomorrow night, Singer will be involved in an excellent 9-man match-up.

Central McLean is hosting top ranked Mott-Regent with the winner earning the top seed for Region-6 in the playoffs.

The Wildfire is undefeated, while Singer`s Cougars only have one loss.
