The trip from Bismarck to Lyons, Kan., isn't exactly a short one, but the Bismarck Senators don't mind too much as they head there Wednesday to play in the Midwest Plains Regional.
The Senators earned the bid after topping Fargo 9-0 in the state championship game last week. It was a dominant performance from Bismarck both at the plate and in the field.
"That game was a big step forward for us," said Senators infielder and pitcher Alex Horner. "We had zero errors on the board, we hit the ball, we put up nine runs and then just our defense and all-around team plays was just phenomenal."
The Senators say they're hoping to ride that momentum from the state tournament into the regionals.
"We're hoping to go down there, I mean, we're not going to be outclassed. We want to go down there and be competitive and surprise some teams," said head coach Shaun Henderson. "Not many people think a team from North Dakota is going to come down and make some noise, but we'll make some noise and try to win a couple games."
The Senators leave Wednesday for Kansas. The Midwest Plains Regional starts Friday with the Senators taking on a team from Missouri at noon CST.
Another Bismarck baseball team is heading to regionals, too. The Babe Ruth 13-year-olds beat West Fargo 8-1 to win the state title this past weekend and will head to the Regionals in Boonville, Mo., next week.
