It's not very often the last place team in the regular season is the host team for the conference tournament. Dickinson State is the exception for baseball, and the Blue Hawks took advantage of it.
DSU played its way into the final day of the North Star tournament and Monday, the Hawks faced Mayville State.
The tournament was double elimination, and so the Blue Hawks had to beat the Comets twice to win the conference title.
DSU exploded for 10 runs in the first game, topping Mayville 10-2. The sixth inning sealed the deal for Hawks as they scored 5 runs, two of which came from Jacob Hignite's 2-run homer.
In the winner-take-all second game, the Hawks could not get the bats going like they did in the first. The Comets won the game 8-1, and the North Star title along with it. Mayville's Tyler Leibert pitched a complete game with only one walk.
The Comets earned the North Star's automatic bid to the NAIA national tournament.
