The Dickinson State football team doesn't have a lot of time to prepare for the season. Their first game is next Saturday, so they've had to make some adjustments and condense their preseason practices.
The coaches say it's been difficult to get the younger players up to speed because of the different practice schedule, but Saturday's intra-squad scrimmage helped them better decide who is ready to play.
"What we do is we're evaluating our second tier guys on one: who can start and two if we get a game situation, who we're going to put in and what kinds of packages we can put in for some of those guys to make sure that we utilize their strengths and that's what we're really looking for in the scrimmage when we evaluate," said Head Coach Pete Stanton. "And then get in a game type of atmosphere where we're going live and they're understanding the whole thing and the big plus is always nobody hurt and we came out injury free today going into the season and that was big."
One injury the Hawks will have to worry about is that of quarterback Kaler Ray.
DSU opens the season August 22 at home against Rocky Mountain College. Kickoff is set for 6:00 pm MT.
