Mineral Springs Waterfall | Video

One of the best kept secrets in North Dakota is the Mineral Springs Waterfall.

That`s right, if you venture past the open prairie into one of the forested areas of the state, you`ll discover a natural wonder that one would expect to find in more mountainous regions of the country.

If you want to drink in the only registered waterfall in the state, Robert Harsel of the North Dakota Forest Service says you`ll need a good pair of hiking boots.

"It`s not an easy hike," Harsel says.

He says you have to walk over some hills and through two miles of woods to get to the Mineral Springs Waterfall.

"I`ve never seen it dry, even during the drought years in the 80`s it was flowing good even in those years," he says.

A marked trail leads you to one of North Dakota`s hidden treasures, but before hikers get to the falls, Bobby Koepplin, of Sheyenne River Valley Scenic Byway, says of the there`s lots to see along the way.

"If they`re quiet they may see turkeys, you may see deer, during birding season you might see different species of birds," Koepplin says.

Koepplin says the water that cascades over the Mineral Springs waterfall flows from deep below the floor of the Sheyenne State Forest.

"It comes from an underground spring, it eventually runs into the Sheyenne River," says Koepplin.

Water drops about eight feet at the Falls and Koeppllin says even in December and January the natural beauty of this site is worth the hike.

"I`m told the wintertime view of the waterfall is exceptional when it`s cascading over the ice," says Koepplin.

In Autumn, crystal clear water mixed with colorful leaves flows over the Mineral Springs Falls, which gives this secluded site a richness you won`t find any other time of the year.

In case you`re wondering, the biggest waterfall in the world is Angel Falls in Venezuela, with a drop of 3212 feet.

The Mineral Springs Falls is located about 10 miles west of Lisbon. If you would like detailed directions to the falls, contact the Sheyenne River Valley National Scenic Byway at 701-845-2251.
