Mandan Municipal Airport was named the state's general aviation airport of the year.

The award is sponsored by the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission and the Airport Association of North Dakota.

It's awarded for excellence in maintaining safety, project management, and community awareness.

"It shows your peers that what you're doing and that you're working hard to advance the air service in North Dakota," said airport manager Jim Lawler."

In 2014, the Mandan airport hosted community outreach events, including movie nights, a fly-in chili feed and provided orientation flights to youth.
