Seventeen people applied for the Mandan Police Chief opening. That list has been cut down to five finalists.
Dennis Bullinger is retiring from the department after 42 years. He spent eight years as the police chief.

People from all over the country applied.
City commissioner and former Mandan Police Chief Dennis Rohr says it's a position many people in law enforcement dream about, but the job isn't going to be easy.
Rohr says applicants answered questionnaires which helped the hiring committee determine the five finalists. He says the number one quality he's looking for in a chief is leadership.
"They have to have the ability to put the right people in place to do the job because without good leadership and without that type of dependency or the skill and knowledge and experience of others, you're going to have a problem," said Rohr.
A new chief is expected to be hired or chosen by Nov. 1.
Bullinger's last day is Dec. 27.
