Heitkamp Proposes Bill to Train Hazmat First Responders

Fifty-nine percent of the oil produced in the Williston Basin moved out of state by rail in December.

In the wake of several derailments and explosions, North Dakota Senator Heidi Heiktamp announced plans to reintroduce a bill that would focus on training and best practices for responding to hazmat situations.

The bill would create a sub-committee under FEMA, and create a training plan, and supply resources to first responders following a hazardous train derailment.
