There must be something about the way Bismarck runs its parks.

The National Recreation and Parks Association has nominated Bismarck as one of four finalists for the gold medal award for exceptional management.

The city was nominated four times for the award in the 1990s and won it in 1993.

The gold medal recognizes the department's ability to address community needs.

"They look at a number of things and I think for us it's not just one thing, you know, Bismarck Parks and Recreation has always offered a very diverse offering of programs, facilities, properties, etc. and community support, our community support continues to be very strong," said Bismarck Parks and Rec Executive Director, Randy Bina.

The winner will be announced in October in St. Louis.
