Saving on Best Sellers

More than a thousand people use the Bismarck Public Library every day. If it`s a good read you`re looking for, the library is selling hundreds of boxes of books on the cheap. Allowing you to save big on a best seller.

Going to the movies and buying brand new books is expensive. Most of the movies made in the last 20 years are based on bestsellers. And they`re all up for grabs.

"So every time we get new books, things that have to go off the shelves that don`t circulate anymore that are going out," said Library Director Kristi Harms.

The library is starting its spring used book sale. Whether you`re a democrat, republican, a hopeless romantic or a history buff, odds are good you can find a paperback tucked away amongst the plethora of boxes.

"We have not sorted the books this time, so that means we have not gone through each and every one. So there`s all kinds of treasures sitting around here," said Assistant Director Mary Jane Schmaltz.

"You might find some really nice vintage books down there. Some things that have some value. We have a whole collection of North Dakota books that we sell separately," Harms said.

That includes a copy written by a well-known weatherman. And best of all, the books sold here are dirt cheap.

"So you just put them on the scale, they`ll tell you how much it weighs and that`s your price," Harms said.

"After 42 years, we`ve finally raised our prices. So it`s a dollar a pound for paperbacks and hardcovers," Schmaltz said.

Even books that are in high demand right now, ones that you might be waiting weeks for just to check out from the library. Chances are, if you look hard enough, you might find it at the book sale.

"You could find things that are one the best seller list currently. People will purchase a copy, get it for a gift. They read it once and they`re done, so it comes to us," Harms said.

Harms also says that if you`re willing to dig and you have a few hours to kill, a trip to the book sale might just pay off. And once you pay for your stack, you`ll probably have lots of change left in your pocket.

The book sale continues through Saturday. If you`re looking to unload a few dozen books of your own, the library is always accepting donations.
