Sports Spotlight: Hannah Richter

BISMARCK, N.D. - Ask an athlete why they chose their college and the overwhelming majority will tell you it's because they felt comfortable with the coaching staff.

Hannah Richter is not just content with the U-Mary's coaches, she's known them for most of her life.

With a change of scenery, it's nice to have a familiar face.

Hannah Richter, Century Senior: "I think it will be a super easy transition having her out there."

Richter heads to U-Mary this fall, but she's known Coach Sarah Cook for some time.

Sarah Cook, U-Mary Head Coach said: "Hannah Banana, that's what I'll call her, that's what I called her when she was 13 years old. I've known Hannah and I love that I get a chance to see her out here and continue her career."

Richter had offers from Bemidji and Wayne State, but playing for her former club coach was an easy choice.

"I've just known her for a long time. And I've liked her as a coach, I've had her for many years, and I think it will be a good experience for me. Especially at the college level," said Richter.

Cook has made a habit of recruiting from her old stomping grounds. Richter will become the sixth Patriot on the Marauders' roster.

"Now seeing them all come together. It's just great for the community. It's great for our team and I just love having that local hero on our roster," said Cook.

Nate Ulness was the girls coach at Century, and an assistant at Mary. He took a head coaching job at Gillette College this winter.

"She's definitely a player that teams have to mark out and be very aware of. They let her sneak behind, there's definitely a good chance she's going to put the ball in the back of the net," said Nate Ulness, former Century High SchooL head coach.

Ulness stopped into practice this week. The familiar face, attracted some familiar jeers.

"He's just easy to make fun of. He can't really take jokes very well. So we just kind of keep them coming. It makes him mad, but I think he secretly likes it," said Richter.

Ulness said: "I mean, already at the beginning of practice she's kicking soccer balls at me like old times so. I'm kind of aware of where she's at right now because she might try and pelt me during the interview."

She'll have plenty of chances to pelt the back of net with U-Mary this fall.
