Two Bismarck schools will be playing for a football championship on Friday. St. Mary’s is in the Dakota Bowl with a shot at the AA Title.
The Saints earned a chance to play for the 4th championship in five years by shutting out Devils Lake 30-0 in the semi-finals. Head Coach of the Saints, Dan Smrekar says, "I thought we looked really fresh last week, I thought that we played fast, I thought it looked like we had good legs, so we were rested and that week helped us. No questions, so, I just, I keep the physicality of the game, keep the speed of the game, like I said I thought even with a bad field we played pretty fast on Saturday, and we need to keep that up."
St. Mary’s played in, and won the AA championship last year. The Saints have won three games in a row since suffering back-to-back losses during the regular season. Senior Cole Gendreau says, "we took advantage of what we had on offense, our offense played really good. And then our defense just, shut them down, and we played good as a team."
Senior Luke Kambeitz adds, "The extra week was really good for us to help prepare. We beat them earlier in the year and it was the same score. We didn't really think about that, we just had to prepare for them, they got better, we got better too, we just prepared very well and came out ready to play."
One of those losses was to Fargo Shanley. The Saints play the Deacons for the AA title on Friday.
