FARGO, N.D. - The biggest advantage of having a bye in the first round of the FCS Playoffs is to get players some rest and maybe get some guys back on the active roster. Just the opposite happened. NDSU's roster got a little smaller over the break.
Bison Head Coach Chris Klieman opened the Monday news conference by saying Quarterback Henry Van Dellen, Wide Receiver Sean Engel and Safety Darren Kelly have been dismissed from the team.
Also, Wide Out Dallas Freeman has been suspended for Saturday's game. No reasons were given.
Now to the game, the University of San Diego beat Northern Arizona to advance to this weeks game against North Dakota State.
The Bison beat the Toreros in the playoffs last year.
"We talk a lot about having a team come in here for the second time in consecutive seasons and it's not as overwhelming as the first time and you look at Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina and now San Diego they have a good formula," said Chris Klieman, NDSU head coach.
Klieman says last year's 45-7 win over San Diego was a close game into the 3rd-quarter and he expects this Saturday's game to be anything but easy.
"They run the football. They have an experience quarterback. They play really good defense and I think most importantly they're really well coached. i have a tremendous amount of respect for the coaching staff and what they've done there with that program and it's no fluke what they did to Northern Arizona. They beat them in every phase of the game and so we'll have our work cut out for us coming up with great plans," said Klieman.
The Bison are the number-2 seed and they'll play in Fargo until Frisco if they can make it that far. It's a 2:30 start which means the Farmers Union Insurance Bison Football Pre-Game show will be live and statewide beginning at 1:30-central time.
The rights to the playoff games belong to ESPN so they will not be on the KFYR-KVLY Bison Television Network.
