BISMARCK, N.D. - The University of Mary men’s and women’s basketball teams are finished with their regular season, which placed the men as the number five seed in the north, and the women as the number four seed.
This week is the start of playoffs. The women will host the first round at the MAC against a very good Winona State, a team they previously lost to on the road.
"Everyone comes in at 0-0, so if you just look at Winona and where they were at, and the fact that they start all three seniors and a junior who all played significant minutes last year on a national tournament team, they're a veteran crew, and a really good team in our league. And, like I said, we're pre-season number one league and end up as the five seed. So, you know, that part it is what it is, but I think our girls are excited. And what we always say, 'it's not about who we play, but how we play,' and if we play as well on Wednesday night as we have been playing the last couple of weeks, we're going to be right there and have a great game with them on Wednesday as well," says Rick Neumann, Women's Head Coach.
Now the men placed as the fifth seed after losing to Minnesota Crookston on Saturday. They will play Minnesota State in Mankato once more.
"Well, we do have a little confidence with them. We have, we feel like it's a good match-up and probably the best we could ask for, for being on the road. But they're a very good team, and it's going to be quite a challenge for us," says Joe Kittell, Men's Head Coach.
Both games are on Wednesday Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. Central Time. The women host Winona State at the University of Mary, while the men are on the road in Mankato, MN.
If both teams win this first round game, they will head to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the quarterfinals.
