Legacy Girls Win First State A Title

BISMARCK, ND - Sometimes State A can be full of surprises. Saturday night the Legacy Sabers made program history. Not only did they make it to state, but they were able to beat every team they played.

In the championship game Saturday night, the sabers rallied against the 3-time defending champs, Fargo Shanley to get the 52-50 victory. Senior Center Brita Feland describes the victory, "I think that just really encouraging each other and pushing each other throughout the game, just getting on those runs and not having the lows and just really encouraging each other the whole time, and, I mean we played in two overtime games this tournament so far, and I think that really helped us out. I think that we knew that tonight we were going to have to bring all defense, and that's how we set up our game plan, and I think that's what really carried us to win the state championship."

Defense helps win championships, but all the credit goes to the girls on the court, as Head Coach Jim Petrik explains. "Well right now it's still kind of hard to believe that everything happened the way that it did. Second year program, first senior class to come through the state championship, couldn't have written the story any better. But all the credit goes back to the kids. They did a heck of a job, believing right away that we can win last year getting state, and now getting the championship. All the credit goes to my kids."

Winning the state title is definitely a good way to end the eight seniors final basketball season.
