BISMARCK, N.D. - Where you are in the conference standings, and where you are in the statewide coaches poll are not always the same.
Dickinson softball is a good example. The Midgets have 16 points in the West Region, which is 4th place heading into play today.
The coaches have Dickinson third behind the West Fargo teams in the Class A poll. Century is ranked 4th and the Patriots are in the Queen City Tuesday.
"It is pretty tricky there so there are some really great teams in this region. We definitely have a big come coming up against Dickinson but by the end of the year we'll know who the top dog is in the area," said junior Madison Kostelecky.
The Patriots head coach agrees. Kevin Ziegler does not think there will be a runaway in the regular season. Century is leading the league with 20 points, just two ahead of Legacy and Minot Ryan.
"One of the things in the west is it's always tough on any given night any team can beat anyone so we're kind of looking at the top six, Dickinson, us, Bismarck High, legacy is going to be up there and in the battle. Minot's going to have something. Jamestown usually comes through with something good. It just depends on who's going to improve the most and who's going to be the steady teams are the ones who are going to be around at the end," said Ziegler.
The coaches have the Sabers 4th in the Class A poll this week, just behind Sheyenne, with the Demons number 8.
In Class B, the top two teams are in the East. Des Lacs-Burlington is number three, Watford City is 6th, while Wilton-Wing is up to number 7. Heart River is sitting in 10th.
