Winter Daze brings promise of summer to Mandan

MANDAN, ND - Mandan Winter Daze has begun! Bringing family fun to Mandan this week.

Winter Daze will eventually give way to summer nights, but to help Mandan get there, the Parks and Recreation Department's luau provides a hint of summer sun in the snow.

"I like going down slides because you get to go fast and it's really fun," said Brooklyn Johs, a resident of Mandan.

"January is cold, why not bring some summertime into one of the coldest months of the year," said Kelly Churchill, the Marketing Director of the Mandan Parks and Recreation Department.

Kids were able to play games together and compete in teams for Hawaiian themed prizes. Even the lifeguards got to have some fun.

"Usually they'll come and swim and we don't have any actual activities for them to do. So this is a change where we have limbo and different games so they can get in and out of the water and it doesn't get boring. So there's always something for them to do," said Tyra Watson, Lifeguard Lead at the Mandan Aquatics Center.

For those not quite ready for the summer there was also free skating and open hockey at the Pepsi All Seasons Arena this afternoon. Other free events this week include: water aerobics, swims, and much more.

"I encourage everyone to come out and enjoy Winter Daze. It's for anyone of all ages. You don't need to register for anything besides the volley ball tournament. It's just an inexpensive way to get out and have fun in your community," said Churchill.

Winter Daze runs through January 28 and Parks and Rec invites all to come out and join in the fun.
