WILLISTON, N.D. - A Williston native is on her way to the Olympics in Rio next month. But she's not going as an Athlete.
Excitement is building for Serena Christianson
"I just want to go. I just want to experience it and start this crazy trip," says Christianson.
The 27-year-old who now lives in Tempe, Arizona, is volunteering for the games. She'll be helping out with the golf events.
"I get to welcome the athletes when they get on the course, figure out if there's anything they need, tidy up areas, clean it, make sure everything's good to go," says Christianson.
Golf is returning to the Olympics after more than 100 years. Christianson highlighted on her application that she was familiar with the sport.
"And when it comes to the Summer Olympics, the only sport that I feel comfortable saying I do with some proficiency is golf," says Christianson.
Despite international concerns about the Zika virus in Brazil, Christianson says she won't let fears derail her plans.
"So am I nervous? A little bit. But it's the same thing about being nervous about getting West Nile or anything like that. And just yesterday, I went to CVS Pharmacy and get some bug spray," says Christianson.
So just like all the athletes, she's ready to take on all challengers.
Christianson joins several thousand Americans who will volunteer for the event.
