Williston City Commission unanimously passes crew camp ordinance

WILLISTON, N.D. - The decision people were eager to hear at Tuesday's Williston City Commission dealt with Ordinance 1050.

The commission unanimously approved the order that states crew camp operators must end their operation by September 1. The ordinance requires crew camp buildings to be removed by May 1, 2018, and the sites must be reclaimed by August 1 of that year.

Under the new proposal, crew camp operators can repurpose their facilities to new uses, such as hotels.

"I really wanted to help the oil and gas industry in case there is another boom or there is a shortage of housing. I believe this new ordinance addresses that issue. It also addresses the fact that if housing becomes really high again because that is hard for our companies to handle during these unstable times," said Deanette Piesik, Williston City Commissioner.

While this ordinance passed, the federal case regarding the previous ordinance that would have required operators to close their camps by July 1 is still undecided. The scheduling conference for that case has been set for September 19.
