TAMPA, FL - The University of Mary women’s cross country team is notorious for their success. After winning the region title for the first time in school history, they were ready for their next challenge in Tampa, FL early Saturday morning for the NCAA DII Cross Country Championships.
Alexis Zeis led the Marauders as she took second place in the event with a time of 20:26.40. The next Marauder to place was Ida Narbuvoll, finishing at a time of 20:51.50 to take 12th place. Both Zeis and Narbuvoll were named All-Americans.
After the race, Head Coach Dennis Newell said, "Even though we came to get third and ended up getting seventh, I think there's more victories to celebrate than just one negative. I think about the whole season and the culmination of these 13 weeks."
As for the two top place finishers for the Marauders, despite their outcome, they were still proud to represent the school. " The outcome as a team, it's not what we wanted but we're happy with it. We've been dealing with a lot of injuries and basically just that and coming in and finishing seventh, that's the second highest place we've ever placed at U-Mary as a team, and we don't graduate anybody so we're coming back next year stronger and we've got some good recruits coming in so hopefully that will help."
The Marauders finished in 7th place overall this year, which is five spots from last year when they placed 12th. The University of Mary was ranked no. 3 in the nation according to the coaches’ poll going into this final meet.
