BISMARCK, N.D. - Sen. Heidi Heitakmp, D-N.D., and three other female senators joined to the #MeToo campaign over the weekend, which focuses on the issue of sexaul harassment and assault.

Heitkamp discussed how she was approached by a retired Minnesota Sheriff's officer in 1993 at an event where she was discussing domestic violence.

Heitkamp says the man approached her after she spoke and said men will always beat their wives and there's nothing you can do about it. She said she felt startled by the man's comments but says we've come a long way in the fight against domestic violence and can do the same with sexual assault.

“We saw dramatic improvements over the years in how we approach the issue of family and domestic violence. Now we're seeing this issue come to the forefront sexual assault and harassment in the workplace,” said Heitkamp.

Heitkamp says everyone has a story about workplace harassment or sexual assault and it will take everyone speaking up to solve the problem.
