Bismarck residents can now wire their own homes.
Bruce Johnson asked the commission to look at the ordinance that prevented homeowners from taking electrical matters into their own hands, and it did. Safety was a concern, but homeowners must obtain permits and have the work inspected by a certified electrician.
"I think it’s a good thing,” Johnson said. “I think people learn about their home electric system and it makes them a little more aware of what they should and shouldn't do electrically, and so it’s a good thing."
Johnson says he wants to redo some of the wiring in his kitchen. He received bids around $4,500, so he plans to do it himself for about $1,000.
