Medical Minute: Nu Calm System

MINOT, N.D. - Anxiety and fear about going to the dentist is nothing new. Many people have concerns about their teeth being worked on, so they just don't go.

A new technology is now being used to help relax dental patients without sedatives or drugs.

Drilling and scraping can send people running away from the dentist, but Broadway Family Dentistry is using the Nu Calm System to help patients relax during their appointments.

"A lot of people have a lot of dental anxiety, and it's one of the biggest reasons people stay away from the dental office. So we wanted another option to help people relax and feel more calm and comfortable in the dental chair," Dentist Dr. Bethany Jensen said.

Nu Calm works to put the mind and body in a state that allows your body to recover, heal and rebuild.

"The great thing about Nu Calm is it's all natural. There's no chemicals or drugs involved so often people feel better than when they came in," Jensen said.

There are four components that make it work. A topical cream that works by counteracting adrenaline, micro current stimulation patches behind each ear to help create the relaxation response, noise-dampening headphones to bring your brain wave pace to the pre-sleep stages and a light-blocking eye mask.

"We can see a noticeable change in their behavior when they're on it. Patients that are normally white-knuckling gripping the chair with anticipation are relaxed. Their hands are relaxed, their breathing is at ease. They don't have those same responses of anxiety," Jensen said.

Medicine isn't the only place this is being used. Sports teams and individuals make it part of their health routine, and dentists are seeing positive results.

"It wasn't originally marketed to the dental field but when they realized what a profound affect it can have on dental patients, they started marketing it more towards dentists," Jensen said.

Hopefully encouraging those who are afraid to get important dental work done.
