McKenzie County upgrading memorial park to honor veterans

McKenzie County has a long history of service.

"We've had prisoners of war, we've had veterans killed in action here from McKenzie County, so I just think it's only right that we do an upgrade to the park." - Jerry Samuelson, McKenzie County Veteran Services

Its 50 year old memorial park needs an upgrade.

"Nothing's been done with it over those 50 years, so we just want to upgrade the park and make it a place for people to come and enjoy."

So crews broke ground on a two-phase renovation of the park earlier this month.

"Phase one will have granite monuments with the veterans' names. We have over two thousand names to put on these granite monuments."

The park will also have an eternal flame and real flag poles, rather than the converted oil pipe that's being used now.

"It's going to be a nice place where people can come and reflect and honor their servicemen and women."

Construction on phase one is expected to be finished next year.
