Internet Crimes Against Children arrest in Watford City

MINOT, N.D. - A Utah man arrested as part of an Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) operation in Ward County made his initial court appearance in Minot Thursday.

Prosecutors have charged 26-year-old Derrik Childs with luring a minor by computer or other electronic means.

They say Childs responded to an ad on the dating website ‘Plenty of Fish’ from what he thought was the profile of a 16-year-old girl, but was actually an undercover officer with the Ward County Sheriff’s Department.

Childs sent sexually provocative photos to the ‘girl’ and asked if they could meet for sex.

Sheriff’s deputies traveled to Watford City, where Childs was living at the time, and arrested him, with the help of McKenzie County deputies.

He remains in custody and will be back in court March 23.

He faces up to five years in prison and having to register as a sex offender if convicted.
