Famous DJ lends his talents to Standing Rock students

Selected students from Standing Rock Elementary and Middle Schools were in for a treat today.

Four time Grammy award winning DJ IZ Avila met the students at Mekoche Recording Studio to teach them about music production.

IZ is best known for traveling the globe as the DJ for Usher, U2's Bono, and Stevie Wonder. Through the Turnaround Arts program IZ exposed students to career paths in the music industry and gave students insight to the recording process itself.

Students learned how to make a simple beat on the drums and how to record a song with sound effects.

“Honestly what impresses me the most is the positivity, the energy and the ideas they have. And how it's so easy for them to articulate that into a beat, into a song like we had a couple of the girls singing today and we actually recorded them so they were able to hear their voices back,” said DJ IZ Avila.

The girls weren't the only ones to hit the sound booth. Eighth-grade rapper who goes by the name Pink Lemonade also spit some rhymes in the studio.

DJ IZ performed live at the middle school's first dance of the year.
