BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR-TV) - Meet the McMertys.
A couple years ago they bought the coffee shop inside the Bismarck library.
They say their hope is to pass it on to Cristian, their teenage son with down syndrome.
“We want him to be able to have employment.” Says Sandy McMerty, “We really believe in the purpose of all people to find work.”
But, the McMerty’s are much more than coffee shop owners.
And rather than telling us, they’re showing us.
“We thought about when we got the diagnosis that Cristian had down syndrome, what would’ve been really great? And it would’ve been really great to see a family with a kid with down syndrome, a family that looked a lot like us and that just wasn’t out there” said Sandy.
This summer they started the gifted bean vlog, chronicling their highs, lows, and everything in between.
“There’s a lot to love in life every day and if we don’t take time to enjoy some of the wild and woolies, it makes like uninteresting”
And so their vlog was born.
With every new installment – they’re growing their following – raking in tens of thousands of views.
