Family raising money to send hit-and-run victim's body home

DICKINSON, N.D. - A Dickinson man was killed by a drunk driver in a hit-and-run on New Year's Day. The family is now trying to send his body back home to Los Angeles, but they need some help.

The victim, 22-year-old Rudy Garcia, came to Dickinson two years ago to work in the oil fields. Family and friends describe him as enthusiastic and say he always wanted to do better for his one-year-old son.

Although Garcia's mom and sisters are in Dickinson, most of his family lives in Los Angeles, where they will hold services. His sister-in-law created a GoFundMe to raise money for transport and funeral expenses. Their goal is $14,000.

"Rudy was so full of life. Even more so when his son arrived. And he was an amazing dad, a big heart, full of life. I mean, you would always see him with a smile. He was just a great person to be around," says Maria Segura, sister-in-law.

Segura says services will be held in Dickinson as well for friends to attend.
