Cathedral of the Holy Spirit holds blue mass for fallen law enforcement, fire personnel

BISMARCK, N.D. - One hundred sixteen law enforcement officers, 22 K-9 units and 68 firefighters were killed on the job in the last year. Cathedral of the Holy Spirit church held a mass to remember them Tuesday.

The church had a service with police and fire from the Bismarck-Mandan area. About 100 people also joined in the service. Bismarck Police Chief Dan Donlin read the names of some of the fallen officers and fire personnel. D

onlin and Bismarck Rural Fire Chief Michael Voigt talked about the importance of remembering.

“These are human beings. They're mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters. They're people who put their lives on the line every day,” said Donlin.

“It's just a reminder that at the end of the day, we're only human too and it makes us have a greater appreciation for our humanity,” said Voigt.
