More than 1.6 million Americans receive hospice care every year. The majority of that care is given in the patient's home.
CHI Health at Home raised a flag outside of the hospital in Bismarck for National Home Care and Hospice month, raising awareness for how hospice care can be an option for patients suffering from a lifetime or terminal illness. A 2012 survey from AARP shows that one-third of seniors feel unprepared for the cost of long term care, and 47 percent of low income seniors don't believe they'll be able to cover their monthly medical over the next 10 years.
“Not to wait if you have questions about it because hospice is not a death sentence. It's a way to fully live your life for as long as you've got it,” said CHI Home Health and Hospice Director Tammy Theurer
In 2015, more than 45 percent of patients received hospice care for more than 30 days.
