Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department searching for man who hit a deputy

BISMARCK, N.D. - The Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department is looking for a man who fled from them Saturday after hitting a deputy multiple times in the chest.

The department says they were conducting a stop on I-94 by mile marker 159 for a traffic offense and the suspect, 47-year-old Lonnie Howard didn’t have his ID and gave the deputy his name.

Major Kelly Leben with the department says the deputy went up to the driver again to take him into custody and he started hitting the deputy several times on the chest.

Leben says another driver stopped to help the deputy. Howard hit their car, crossed the median and began going East on I-94 and then went the wrong way on the interstate entrance.

Deputies say they lost the car and eventually found it by 16th St., but couldn’t find Howard.

The Bismarck Police Department says they assisted in the search.

Howard is wanted on three unrelated warrants from the United States Marshal, the North Dakota Prison and a Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms warrant.
